What is a Jaguar doing in my jarrito?

The jaguar, also known by Olmecas as Tepeyollotl (Heart of the mountain) has inspired several ancient civilizations, most of the pioneers of our folklore.

The jaguar, representation of the night sky to the insides of Earth, his eyes symbolize the night and the jaguar spots epitomize the night stars. His presence indicated the end of an era, just like the moon suggests the end of the day. The jaguar also renders the Earth’s aggressivity.

In mexica history, the two sons (Tezcatlipoca, god of the night sky and Quetzalcoatl, god of life) of the omnipresent god & goddess (Ometeotl & Omecíhuatl, creators of the universe) have a mortal combat by the river, Quetzalcoatl stabs his own brother and lets him drown in the river, Tezcatlipoca emerges from the river as a Jaguar giving birth to a new era.

The courage & audacity of the jaguar inspired many warriors across mesoamerica giving birth to the Jaguar Warrior who were the special ops of the Aztec army, the Jaguar had so much influence that even the Kings (Tlatoanis or Mexica King) used to eat jaguar broth to be fearless and to develop strength.

Nowadays in San Nicólas Zitlala, Guerrero, young men wear typic jaguar costumes and have “fights” (ritual dancing) to welcome the rainy season The jaguar is so distinctive in Guerrero, that we have it in our state shield.
